What was supposed to be a carefully planned hashtag promotion purchased by Americans for Prosperity, a republican backed group seems to have backfired.
During President Bill Clinton’s speech, and hours after the Democratic National Convention, a sponsored hashtag (#16TrillionFail) was supposed to pin the current state of the deficit to on President Obama. Ironically, thanks to a very pointed speech by President Clinton the purchase became target practice and a forum for amplifying some of President Clinton’s most potent sound bytes.
Even worse for AFP: this graph from @MotivatedInOhio began to resonate adding some substance to the biased backlash… Ouch.
Considering the number of #arithmatic hashtags I saw coupled with the #16TrillionFail sponsored hashtag, I’m surprised #arithmatic wasn’t a trending topic as well. If you missed Clinton’s speech here’s the big soundbyte of the night that coined the #arithmatic hashtag.

Now, people ask me all the time how we got four surplus budgets in a row. What new ideas did we bring to Washington? I always give a one-word answer: Arithmetic.
Nice follow up Nick. I didn’t follow this on Twitter but this makes an interesting mini case study of Twitter Advertising go wrong. On another note, I’m glad I can finally comment here haha.
Hey Alonso – thanks buddy. There are a few of these examples of the hashtag gone wrong. McD’s comes to mind most prominently. If you put a case study together let me know – I’d love to take a look!
